CCSO warns of increased avalanche danger

February 8, 2024

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit reminds anyone recreating in the winter backcountry, particularly on the San Francisco Peaks, to be prepared for avalanches and other winter hazards.

Officials say the current storm may lead to the first natural avalanche cycle of the season, as up to four feet of snow could overload the weak lower levels of the snowpack, and increase the risk of human-triggered avalanches. They advise skiers and riders to avoid slopes where the snow reaches near or above the tree line; and you can visit Kachinapeaks.org to see their current avalanche forecast.

Anyone recreating on foot should have the proper equipment for over-the-snow travel; in addition to navigation gear, first aid and emergency shelter supplies, and an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel.

Leave a detailed trip plan with a trusted person so that they can contact authorities if you are overdue. And keep in mind that GPS navigation apps do not usually take snow or forest road closures into account when suggesting routes.
