Rizo-Lopez queso fresco, cotija cheese products linked to long-term Listeria outbreak

February 8, 2024

The US Food & Drug Administration has announced the recall of dairy products sold by Rizo-Lopez Foods under more than a dozen brand names, because they have been linked to a listeria outbreak.

The recall includes cheese, yogurt and sour cream products sold at a variety of stores, including Food City; and you can see the complete list by visiting fda.gov/recalls.

More than two dozen cases of listeria in 11 states over the past ten years have been linked to certain queso fresco and cotija cheese products, with four cases in Arizona.Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in pregnant women, young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, nausea, stomach pain, and diarrhea.

Consumers should throw away the recalled products, or return them to the place of purchase; and clean your refrigerator and any surfaces they may have touched.
