The driver of a side-by-side off-highway vehicle died after a crash on Senator Highway, south of Prescott, Thursday night.

The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office says the passenger, who was able to call 911 after the crash, said the driver had lost control of the vehicle near mile marker 10.5, and they went over the edge of a steep cliff, ending up between 100-150 feet below the roadway. Neither rider was using a seatbelt or helmet at the time.

Responding Groom Creek, Prescott Fire and YCSO personnel found the driver pinned under the rear of the vehicle, and the passenger trapped inside. Crews were able to roll the vehicle over and free both occupants, and they immediately started CPR on the unresponsive driver. However, after about an hour the patient was pronounced deceased.
