Illegal campfire spreads into small wildfire at Grand Canyon

An illegal wildfire spread before being put out at Grand Canyon

April 8, 2024

Grand Canyon fire crews put out small wildfire caused by an illegal campfire on the southeastern side of the Canyon last Wednesday.

According to the National Park Service, an off-duty ranger noticed the fire near the Lipan Point parking lot, and quickly notified emergency dispatchers. Despite gusty and erratic winds on the rim, a quick response limited the blaze to less than 1/8th of an acre.

The fire had spread from a campfire ring someone had made; even though Stage I fire restrictions, which are always in effect at the Grand Canyon, limit campfires and solid-fuel stoves to designated areas in developed campgrounds.
