New AZ law moves Primary Election date from Aug. 6 to July 30

February 16, 2024

With the state legislature passing HB 2785 last week, this year’s Primary Election will be moved up a week, from August 6th to July 30th.

Related deadlines for voter registration, military and overseas ballots and early voting will also be moved up a week.

The bill was a response to 2022 legislation that changed election recount laws, which created the possibility that lengthy recounts could have kept military and overseas voters from receiving their General Election ballots in time, or that recounts in the General Election could cause the state to miss the deadline to certify the results of a presidential election.

The new law also codifies ballot signature verification guidelines, which have previously been policies of the Secretary of State’s office, into state law; and reduced the time that voters whose ballot was rejected have to cure, or fix, their ballot, from five business days to five calendar days.

The Coconino County Recorder’s Office advises voters that the 2024 Voter Guide they recently mailed out was produced before the Primary date change; and they will be sending out an updated supplemental guide in April.

If you did not receive a Voter Guide, there may be a problem with your registration; and you should contact the Recorder’s Office at 928-679-7860.
