The red rock, by axle

Sedona invented the jeep tour, but the trails belong to everybody with clearance and sense. Here’s every legendary route — rated honestly, mapped from orbit, and judged right now by the actual sky: last night’s rain, today’s storm fuel, the heat, the wind, the fire order, and how much daylight you’ve got left to make it off the rock.

The trail desk

One read of the desert, applied to every trail below. These are the numbers the verdicts are computed from — receipts first, always.

Reading the desert…

The trails

Eight routes, three grades of pain. GREEN takes a stock high-clearance SUV, GOLD wants real 4x4 and low range, BLACK wants lockers, a spotter, and humility.

Lengths, climbs and times are approximate and one-way unless noted. Verdicts are computed from live weather, fire orders and daylight — they are advice, not permission. The trail always gets the final vote.

🛰️ From orbit

Every trailhead pinned on the actual satellite view — green, gold and black by difficulty. This is what the pink Jeeps see from the office.

Know before you crawl

The rules are simple and the desert is patient. It will outlast your warranty.

🚘 Stay on the route

Every legal trail here is on the Coconino’s Motor Vehicle Use Map. One set of tracks off-route scars cryptobiotic soil for decades — and carries a real fine. The rock is the playground; the dirt beside it is not.

🎫 Passes & permits

A Red Rock Pass covers parking at most trailheads (buy at kiosks or ranger stations). Fire restrictions change what’s legal out there — the live restriction card is on our Weather page, straight from the Forest Service.

📶 Cell service dies out there

Broken Arrow’s back half, Sycamore Pass, most of Schnebly — dead zones. Tell someone your route, carry water like you mean it, and keep the radio on 106.5: it reaches where the bars don’t.

🤹 Rather ride than drive?

The local outfitters run Broken Arrow and Diamondback daily with drivers who do it a thousand times a year — worth every penny if slickrock ledges aren’t your idea of relaxing. Same rocks, zero body-panel anxiety.

📻

The official soundtrack of doors-off

Yacht rock over slickrock — that’s the combination this town runs on. Put 106.5 FM on before you drop in (the stream dies with your bars; the FM signal doesn’t), and request your trail song before you leave pavement.
